You just put down your newspaper and two articles stand out to you, “Local Man Arrested For Pot” and “Medical Pot Patients Meet With Senator”.

Many of our own articles at the Marijuana Patients Organization make use of the word pot in the title. There are many reasons publishers choose the word pot in titling cannabis related articles — but most of the time it is to increase article visibility.

Use of words like; marijuana, cannabis, or reefer in a title can affect your Google and Facebook ranking. Impacting how many will view your story.

We conducted and A/B test through Facebook. We used the article JFK Smoked Medical Pot which has been viewed over 500,000 times. We switched the title to JFK Smoked Medical Cannabis during our test and saw page view rates drop nearly 91% through Facebook. Using marijuana, cannabis and other ‘buzz’ words in your title will trigger ‘Drug references’ within the internet algorithm matrix and your article will be shown to fewer people.

The entire internet has gone to pot if you ask me.
